Straight leg: the safest bet
A straight-leg pant is the easiest silhouette to build a wardrobe around — it doesn’t cling, doesn’t balloon, and works with everything from sneakers to heels. If you only own one pair of tailored pants, this is the cut to start with.
Wide-leg pants need a fitted top to balance the volume — a tucked-in shirt or a cropped jacket keeps the proportions from swallowing your frame. Tapered pants do the opposite: they pair best with something looser on top.
- Straight leg — the most versatile, works with almost any shoe
- Wide leg — balance with a fitted top and a heel to avoid puddling fabric
- Tapered — pairs best with an oversized top for balanced proportions
Getting the length right
More outfits are let down by hem length than by the cut itself. Wide-leg pants should just graze the top of your shoe; straight-leg can break slightly; tapered pants look best cropped just above the ankle.
“A great silhouette in the wrong length still reads as a mistake. Get the hem right before anything else.”

If you’re between cuts, start with straight leg in a mid-weight fabric — it’s the easiest to tailor later if you decide you want more or less volume.
